Well-known techniques establish easily that a completely regular semigroup is orthodox, that is, an ``orthogroup'', if and only if it contains no ``two-by-two'' nonorthodox completely simple subsemigroup. From this starting point, the author finds the minimal non-orthogroup varieties of completely regular semigroups (regarded as algebras of type \((\cdot,{}^{-1})\)) and describes them in various ways. He then goes on to analogues for local orthogroups (completely regular semigroups in which each regular submonoid is an orthogroup) and for completely regular semigroups in which Green's relation \(\mathcal H\) is a left, right or two-sided congruence, respectively (members of this last class being called ``cryptogroups'' or ``bands of groups''). Further, the subvarieties of each of these minimal ``non-\(\mathcal V\)'' varieties are explicitly determined.
