The paper is concerned with the following inverse spectrum problem: Given a family \(\sigma=(\lambda_1,\lambda_2,\ldots,\lambda_n)\) of real numbers subject to conditions which are too involved to be presented here, then there is a nonnegative generalized stochastic \((n\times n)\)-matrix \(A\) with spectrum \(\sigma\). This result improves, in particular, a theorem due to \textit{F. L. Salzmann} [ibid. 5, 329-338 (1972; Zbl 0255.15009)]. Furthermore, several explicit examples of families \(\sigma\) and corresponding matrices with spectrum \(\sigma\) are given in order to illustrate the relationship between the present results and various conditions which have been stated by other authors.
