Linear discrete-time time-varying MIMO systems are considered, having the state-space representation \[ x(t+1)=A(t)x(t)+B(t)u(t) \] \[ y(t)=C(t)x(t)+D(t)u(t). \] For completely \(n\)-step observable systems with invariant observability structure a canonical representation is obtained, as well as an equivalent minimally parametrized polynomial input-output model. This approach is applied to the realization of input-output sequences of periodic systems. The proposed realization algorithm firstly determines the observability structure (i.e. the observability indices) of the system and secondly the model parameters. The initial state is also calculated. Realizability conditions are emphasized. A numerical example illustrates the proposed algorithm. The open case of a time-dependent observability structure is presented as a possible future research direction.
