The unramified Fontaine-Mazur conjecture [\textit{J.-M. Fontaine} and \textit{B. Mazur}, in: Elliptic curves, modular forms, and Fermat's last theorem. Hong Kong 1993, Ser. Number Theory I, 41--78 (1995; Zbl 0839.14011)] is the following: Conjecture. Let \(K\) be a number field, \(p\) a rational prime, and \(S\) a finite set of primes of \(K\) not containing any primes above \(p\). Let \(G_{K,S}\) be the Galois group of the maximal extension of \(K\) unramified outside \(S\). Then any continuous representation of \(G_{K,S}\) on a finite \(\mathbb{Q}_{p}\)-vector space \(V\) factors through a finite quotient. The main result of the paper asserts that if one assumes that the representation of \(G_{K,S}\) on \(V\) is ``motivic'' in a suitable sense then the action of \(G_{K,S}\) factors through a finite quotient. The authors define the category of motives analogously to Deligne's construction of motives coming from absolute Hodge cycles but instead of taking Betti, de Rham and étale realisations they consider de Rham, étale and crystalline realisations. They also show that every motive (in the above sense) with trivial Hodge filtration is isomorphic to an Artin motive.
