Formulas for the number of representations of positive integers by positive definite quadratic forms lead us to the theory of modular forms and particularly to the theorem on the expansion of theta functions of quadratic forms in linear combinations of Eisenstein series and parabolic forms from the Hecke basis. Based on the period theory due to Eichler and Shimura, \textit{Yu. I. Manin} [Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 92(134), 378--401 (1973; Zbl 0293.14007)] used the Hecke operators and finite continued fractions to construct special theta functions not covered by the earlier known traditional schemes. They are defined in an ``internal manner'' for each eigenfunction of the Hecke operators from the space of parabolic forms with respect to the modular group. The present paper proposes a construction that allows one to build, in an ``external manner'', the linear space over the field of complex numbers generated by Manin's theta functions.
