The author considers the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping and source terms \(u_{tt}-\Delta u +a u_t |u_t |^{m-1} = bu|u|^{p-1}\) in \({\mathbb R} \times {\mathbb R}^n\), supplemented with compactly supported initial conditions \(u (0,x)=f(x) \in H^1 ({\mathbb R}^n)\) and \(u_t(0,x)=g(x) \in L^2({\mathbb R}^n)\). Here, \(a,b>0\) are constant. It was proved in the paper that under the assumptions: \(p\leq m\), \(1<p \leq n/(n-2)\), and \(m>1\), the Cauchy problem has a unique global solution. On the other hand, when \(m<p\), any weak solution blows up in finite time if either (i) \(m>np(n+p+1)\) and the initial energy is negative, or (ii) \(m<np/(n+p+1)\) and the initial energy is sufficiently negative and \(\int fg dx \geq 0\). The author also studies the blow-up problem for the wave equation with nonlinear damping and source terms and decaying linear perturbation of the type \(q^2(x)u\), where \(\lim_{|x|\to \infty} q(x) =0\).
