There are now various competing definitions of `weak higher-dimensional category' in the literature; it is not yet clear which of them is destined to become standard, but it is certainly time to begin examining their structure and their interrelations. The present paper is a contribution to that programme: in it, the author observes that several of the definitions make use of concepts relating to globular sets, and that some of these concepts may be explained in terms of internal category theory in the topos of globular sets. In particular, he shows that higher trees in the sense of \textit{M. Batanin} may be viewed as `generalized natural numbers' in this topos.
