Let \(A\) be an associative commutative algebra with unit element over a field \(k\). Fix a space \(D\) of commuting derivations of \(A\). Denote by \(k[D]\) the symmetric algebra of the space \(D\). Set \(A[D]=A\otimes_kk[D]\). Suppose that \(F\) is the set of all \(a\in A\) such that \(\partial(a)=0\) for all \(\partial\in D\). Then \(\overline A[D]=A[D]/F\) is a Lie algebra with respect to the Lie multiplication \([x,y]=xy-yx\). It is shown that the Lie algebra \(\overline A[D]\) is simple if and only if \(A\) is \(D\)-simple, and \(A\) is a faithful \(k[D]\)-module. The algebra \(A[D]\) is simple if and only if \(A\) is \(D\)-simple and \(A\) is a faithful \(F[D]\)-module.
