An essentially isolated determinantal singularity is a determinantal singularity which in each point is isomorphic to a generic determinantal singularity except possibly at the origin. After recalling the definition and formulas for the singular vanishing Euler characteristic and recalling the Euler obstruction this obstruction is calculated for some determinantal varieties, admitting at most three strata. In particular the Euler obstruction is computed for the simple four-dimensional determinantals classified by \textit{A. Frühbis-Krüger} and \textit{A. Neumer} [Commun. Algebra 38, No. 2, 454--495 (2010; Zbl 1193.32015)].
