The classical Riesz transforms in \(\mathbb R^n\) are generalized to noncommutative Riesz transforms associated to conditionally negative length functions on group von Neumann algebras, where the additional structure given by the length function replaces the standard differential structure on \(\mathbb R^n\). New dimension free estimates for the noncommutative Riesz transforms are obtained, new Sobolev-Besov type smoothness conditions are provided, and it is shown that the Hörmander-Mikhlin multipliers are Littlewood-Paley averages of the noncommutative Riesz transforms. As an example, the case of free groups is considered and a version of twisted Littlewood-Paley estimate is proved.
