The aim of this paper is to study generalized translation operators with weight functions on the unit ball and on the simplex in \(R^d\). Then they are used to deal with weighted approximation and orthogonal expansions. The study of the generalized translation operators relies on that of the weighted spherical means see [\textit{Y. Xu}, Constructive Approximation 21, No. 1, 1--28 (2005; Zbl 1069.33014); Adv. Comput. Math. 21, No. 1-2, 37--58 (2004; Zbl 1043.42022)]) which are generalizations of ordinary spherical means. One of the results provides an explicit integral formula for the generalized translation operator with respect to the classical weight function on the unit ball \[ W_\mu^B(x)=(1-\| x\|^2)^{\mu-1/2}, \quad x\in B^d, \] which extend the univariate generalized translation operator to several variables.
