A main result is the following structure theorem: let \(M\) be a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature. If \(M\) is simply connected then \(M=N\times M'\) holomorphically and isometrically, \(N\) is compact simply connected Kähler, \(M'\) complete noncompact Kähler, and \(N\), \(M'\) have nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature. \(M'\) supports a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic function with bounded gradient. Moreover, \(M'\) satisfies a certain growth rate condition for volumes of geodesic balls and a decay condition for the scalar curvature. If, in addition, \(M\) has nonnegative sectional curvature outside a compact set, then \(M'\) is Stein. If the holomorphic bisectional curvature of \(M\) is positive at some point, then \(M\) itself supports a function like \(M'\) above, and if, in addition, \(M\) has nonnegative sectional curvature outside a compact set, then \(M\) is Stein.
