The authors study a modified Bernstein-Durrmeyer operator \(P_n(f,x)\) which can be applied to Lebesgue integrable functions \(f\) on the interval \([0,1]\). This positive operator has the properties: If \(f\) is a continuous function and \(f^{(r)}(x)\) exists at a point \(x\in (0,1)\) then the \(r\)-th derivative \(P_n^{(r)}(f,x)\) converges to \(f^{(r)}(x)\) as \(n\to \infty\). If \(f^{(r+2)}(x)\) exists at a point \(x\in (0,1)\) then \(n[P_n^{(r)}(f,x)-f^{(r)}(x)]\) converges to \(x(1-x)f^{(r+2)}(x) +[r-x(1+2r)]f^{(r+1)}(x) -r^2 f^{(r)}(x) \) as \(n\to \infty\).
