The author proves that if a complete Riemannian manifold M of nonnegative sectional curvature is isometric to \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) outside a compact proper subset, then M is isometric to \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\). If for the sectional curvature K of M we have \(K\geq -1\) and M is isometric to the hyperbolic space \(H^ n(-1)\) of constant curvature -1 outside a metric ball of radius \(r<\log (20\sqrt{2}-1)/17,\) then M is isometric to \(H^ n(-1)\). In the case \(n=2\) this theorem holds outside any compact subset of \(H^ 2(-1)\). If \(K\geq 1\) and M is isometric to the sphere \(S^ n(1)\) of constant curvature 1 outside a metric ball of radius \(r<\pi /4\), then M is isometric to \(S^ n(1)\).
