This paper presents an iterative finite element algorithm for elliptic problems with strongly discontinuous coefficients. The method is based on a nonoverlapping domain decomposition approach with explicitly known optimal relaxation parameters. Numerical comparisons are made for discontinuity jumps of the coefficients in the order \(0\), \(10^5\), \(10^{10}\), \(10^{50}\), and \(10^{100}\), which show that the method converges faster as these jumps become larger and the accuracy does not deteriorate.
