It is well-known that the algebra of real quaternions is isomorphic to the real \(4\times 4\)-matrix algebra. On the reason of non-associativity it is not possible to obtain the same for the real division octonion algebra \(\mathcal O\). In this paper the author describes a pseudo real matrix representation of \(\mathcal O\) and considers it in detail. From the methodical point of view behind all of his observations stands the Cayley-Dickson process and properties of real quaternions. Moreover, in this paper linear matrix equations over the octonion algebra are solved. At the end of its contribution the author proves some properties of Hermitian octonion matrices under reflection to corresponding results by \textit{S. Okubo} [Math. Jap. 41, No.~1, 59-79 (1995; Zbl 0820.15019)] and by \textit{T. Dray} and \textit{C. A. Manogue} [Adv. Appl. Clifford Algebra 8, No.~2, 341-364 (1998; Zbl 0927.15007)]. The approach of the author yields relatively complete results in an elegant way and it seems to be worthy to continue in this direction.
