Let \(p\) be a prime and \(G_\mathbb{Q}\) the absolute Galois group of \(\mathbb{Q}\). This article gives two conjectures, the first states that a \(\operatorname {mod}p\) representation of \(G_\mathbb{Q}\) satisfying a parity condition is attached to a Hecke-eigenclass in the \(\operatorname {mod}p\) cohomology of a congruence subgroup \(\Gamma\) of \(\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})\). Attachment means as usual that the Frobenius eigenvalues and the Hecke eigenvalues determine each other in a precise sense. The second conjecture is a refinement as it gives a construction of the \(\Gamma\)-module in whose cohomology the class is to be found. Compatibility with twisting and dualizing is discussed, and evidence is given by theoretical means (proven special cases) and by computer generated examples.
