\textit{A. Lubotzky}, \textit{R. Phillips} and \textit{P. Sarnak} [Combinatorica 8, 261-277 (1988; Zbl 0661.05035)] defined Ramanujan graphs as regular graphs whose adjacency matrices, or their Laplacians, have eigenvalues satisfying certain ``best possible'' bounds. The present authors present a higher-dimensional generalization of this concept to regular cubical complexes. They construct infinite families of Ramanujan regular cubical complexes, with fixed regularities \((r_1,\dots, r_g)\), where \(r_j= q_j+ 1\) and the \(q_j\)'s are any prime powers. The construction uses quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. They also construct Ramanujan local systems on their examples. Their theory is also valid for Hermitian local systems over cubical complexes.
