The notion of the depth of a representation of an admissible representation of the group of \(F\)-rational points of an algebraic group defined over the non-local field \(F\) is a refinement of the classical notion of level. In concrete applications of the theory of automorphic representations information about the depth is of central importance; the passage to a representation-theoretic approach is often at the cost of giving up this data. This paper addresses this problem and gives a most satisfying solution in a general setting. More precisely, the author proves that under the local theta correspondence for a type I dual reductive pair the depth is preserved. The proof is based on a very delicate local analysis which extends most of the known techniques available in this area.
