Rather than making a priori kinematical assumption, the variational asymptotic method (VAM) is utilized to split the 3D elasticity problem into a linear 1D normal line analysis and a nonlinear 2D plate analysis. Minimization of an error term leads to a Reissner-like plate model, which is as close as possible to asymptotic correctness. Recovery relations are proposed to obtain 3D displacements, strains and stresses from the 2D plate theory. These relations are reached by applying the VAM once more. A corresponding development for shells is published by \textit{W. Yu, D. H. Hodges} and \textit{V. V. Volovoi} [Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 191, No. 44, 5087--5109 (2002; Zbl 1060.74044)].
