The author verifies the strong Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture for integers in real number fields at the prime 2. Let \(F\) be a totally real number field and let \(E= F(\root 4\of{1})\), with \(Gal(E/F)= C_2\). Then the canonical map \(K/2(R_F)\to K/2(R_E)^{hC_2}\) between mod two algebraic \(K\)-theory spectra is a weak equivalence on zero-connected covers. The proof is given by comparing two explicit computations which make heavy use of spectral sequences. The introduction contains an interesting historical survey of the Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjectures and their influence on K-theory.
