The classical Beckman-Quarles theorem says that any unit-distance preserving mapping \(f:\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^n\) \((n\geq 2)\) is an isometry. In this spirit, the author investigates distance-preserving mappings from \(\mathbb{R}^n\) to \(\mathbb{C}^n\), proving for example that if \(x,y\in \mathbb{R}^n\) and \(\| x-y\|^2\) is not a rational number, then there exists a mapping \(g:\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{C}^n\) not preserving the distance of \(x\) and \(y\) although \(g\) preserves all distances \(\sqrt r\) with rational \(r\geq 0\). This has a number of interesting consequences derived in that paper, and a final theorem states that any mapping \(g: \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{C}^n\) \((n\geq 2)\) preserving unit-distance preserves all distances provided that \(g\) is continuous with respect to the product topologies of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and \(\mathbb{C}^n\).
