For a non-Archimedean local field F having finite residue field, let \(D\) be a central F-division algebra of dimension \(n^2\), where \(n\) is a positive integer. Then the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence gives a canonical bijection \(\Pi \rightarrow \Pi^D\), from the set of equivalence classes of irreducible smooth essentially square-integrable representations \(\Pi\) of \(G\) to the set of equivalence classes of irreducible smooth representations of \(D^x\). In this article a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of dim \(\tau\), for an irreducible smooth representation \(\tau\) of \(D^x\) to be of the form \(\Pi^D\), for an irreducible supercuspidal representation \(\Pi\) of \(G\) is given, thereby solving an old problem.
