Let \(G(n)\) be a finite group of Lie type consisting of the set of fixed points of the \(n\)-th Frobenius morphism on a simply connected semisimple algebraic group \(G\) defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p > 0\). The author investigates the generic property of the first Cartan invariant for \(G(n)\), i.e., when \(p\) is large enough, the first Cartan invariant for \(G(n)\) is independent of \(p\). He shows that for \(p\) greater than \(4h - 3\) (where \(h\) denotes the Coxeter number of the corresponding root system), and if the so-called Verma conjecture for \(G\) holds, then the first Cartan invariant of \(G(n)\) is independent of \(p\). However, this lower bound for \(p\) is not the best possible.
