If \(R\) is an associative ring and \(L(R)\) its associated Lie ring with multiplication \([x,y]=xy-yx\), the Lie derived series, \(\delta^{[n]}(L(R))\), is defined inductively by \(\delta^{[0]}(L(R))=R\), \(\delta^{[n+1]}(L(R))=[\delta^{[n]}(L(R)),\delta^{[n]}(L(R))].\) Similarly, the strong Lie derived series \(\delta^{[n]}(R)\), is defined inductively by \(\delta^{(0)}(R)=R\), \(\delta^{(n+1)}(R)=[\delta^{(n)}(R),\delta^{(n)}(R)]R\). For \(K\) a field of characteristic \(p>2\), \(G\) a group, and \(KG\) the group ring of \(G\) over \(K\), the author determines precisely when \(\delta^{(3)}(KG)=0\). When \(\delta^{(3)}(KG)=0\), by examining a power of the augmentation ideal of the group ring of the derived group of \(G\), it is shown that either \(G\) is abelian or \(p\leq 7\). The author then considers the possible candidates for \(G\) when the condition on this characteristic is satisfied. The author uses this result to show that for \(p\geq 7\), \(\delta^{(3)}(KG)=0\) if and only if \(\delta^{[3]}(L(KG))=0\).
