The authors study the problem of approximation by translates of refinable functions in the sense that the functions \(f(x)\) are refinable if they are combinations of the rescaled and translated functions \(f(2x-k)\). The matrix case is studied and some applications to finite elements and ``multiwavelets'' are discussed.
