Let \(X\) be a projective manifold, let \(L\) be a holomorphic line bundle on \(X\) with first Chern class \(c_1(L)\) and assume that \(c_1(L)\) is represented by the smooth \(d\)-closed \((1,1)\)-form \(\theta\). Recall that a function \(\varphi:X\to [-\infty,+\infty)\) is said to be \(\theta\)-plurisubharmonic (\(\theta\)-psh), if \(\varphi\) is upper semi-continuous on \(X\) and \(\theta+dd^c\varphi\) is a positive \((1,1)\)-current. \textit{D. Coman, V. Guedj} and \textit{A. Zeriahi} proved in [J. Reine Angew. Math. 676, 33--49 (2013; Zbl 1269.32018)] that if \(L\) is an ample line bundle and \(\theta\) is a Kähler form representing \(c_1(L)\), then every \(\theta|V\)-psh function on any subvariety \(V\) of \(X\) extends to a \(\theta\)-psh function on \(X\). \smallskip The main result of this paper is the converse statement: Let \(L\) be a pseudo-effective line bundle whose first Chern class \(c_1(L)\) is not zero. Assume that \(L\) satisfies the property that every \(\theta|V\)-psh function on any subvariety \(V\) of \(X\) extends to a \(\theta\)-psh function on \(X\). Then \(L\) is an ample line bundle.
