A posteriori finite element error bounds for certain linear functionals of the solutions to linear and semilinear elliptic equations are derived. Under weak hypotheses on the behavior of the numerical solution reliable upper and lower bounds on the functionals can be given and verified in practical one-dimensional computations with Helmholtz' and Burger equation.
