Subject of the paper is the Euler-Riesz system with isentropic pressure law in the \(d\)-dimensional whole space, \(d\geq2\), which differs from the compressible Euler equations by an additional attraction/repulsion term given by means of a fractional derivative of the density function. The first main result shows the local-in-time existence of classical solutions to the associated initial-value problem; the second main results yields global-in-time solutions when the initial density is small and the initial velocity is close to a vector field from which suitable solutions of the Burgers equation emanate. In contrast to the first result, the second one requires initial data with certain decay at infinity. Moreover, in the case of an ideal gas, the local-existence result keeps valid, while existence for the suitable initial data is only established `almost globally'. The proofs are based on the derivation of elaborated energy estimates for a suitable symmetrization of the Euler-Riesz system.
