The authors present a survey about index iteration theories for periodic solution orbits of Hamiltonian systems. They start from a short review of the Maslov-type theory for symplectic paths. The aim of the text is to describe a history of the development of the results, some motivations and the role of the results of the group lead by Y. Long until the present state of the art. The results are presented without proofs but extensive and informative references are given with more than 150 issues. Some applications to closed geodesics on compact manifolds and periodic orbits of the \(N\)-body problems are shortly given.
