The authors first study a pair of Rössler oscillators, diffusively coupled in both \(x\) and \(y\) but with different coupling strengths. Depending on the coupling strengths the oscillators may synchronise (or not), the system may be chaotic (or not), and it may have coexisting attractors. When multistable, the basins of attraction for the different attractors are intertwined. They then consider a network of such oscillators on a ring, diffusively coupled to some number of neighbours on either side. For some values of parameters they observe states in which oscillators appear to be randomly assigned to one of two states, these states having different dynamics and different average frequencies. These network states are referred to as ``chimeras''. Such states also appear for global coupling. The master stability function is used in an attempt to explain the existence of such states.
