The Abel-Poisson operator for functions in \(L^1(S^n)\) is given by \[ V_t^1(f)(x)=\sum_{k=0}^\infty u^k Y_k(f;x), \] where \(Y_k(f;x)\) is the projection of \(f\) onto the space of spherical harmonics of degree \(k\), and \(t \in [0,1)\). In this paper, the authors study a generalization of this operator, \[ T_{q,t}^\gamma(f) := \sum_{k=0}^\infty \exp\left(-q(k)\right)^{\gamma t} Y_k(f), \] called an \textit{exponential type operator}. Here, \(q\) is a polynomial with zero constant term and positive leading coefficient, and \(\gamma \in (0,1]\). These operators are shown to form a semigroup with respect to the parameter \(t\). \vskip .15 in The authors prove the following results: a Bernstein type inequality for the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup; the equivalence of the approximation error of the Boolean sums of the operators \(T_{q,t}^\gamma(f)\) and the \(K\)-functional induced by the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup; a classification of the saturation order and saturation class of the operators \(T_{q,t}^\gamma\); and, for two specific examples (the Abel-Poisson sum and the generalized spherical Weierstrass operator), the equivalence of the approximation error and the modulus of smoothness.
