The author studies a model of geophysical flow modelling equatorial currents or winds involving the Coriolis parameter \(f\) depending on the latitude \(y\). In non-dimensional form, the corresponding system is of shallow water type, involving the Froude number \(\epsilon\) as a key (small) parameter and one is interested in its singular limit \(\epsilon\to 0\). When \(f\) is a linear function of \(y\), the asymptotics have been obtained by the author and Majda and the goal of the article is to relax linearity which requires a completely different approach.
