Let M be a connected real hypersurface in the quaternionic projective space \({\mathbb{H}}P^ m\) (m\(\geq 2)\) of constant quaternionic sectional curvature 4. The quaternionic Kähler structure V of \({\mathbb{H}}P^ m\) provides a natural orthogonal decomposition \(D_ 1\perp D_ 2\) of the tangent bundle TM of M, where \(D_ 1\) is the maximal subbundle of TM which is mapped into itself by each section in V. In this article the following result is established: If M has harmonic curvature (that is, if the covariant derivative of the Ricci tensor of M is symmetric in all its variables), and if the shape operator of M restricted to \(D_ 2\) is a multiple of the identity transformation of \(D_ 2\) at each point, then M is an open subset of a geodesic hypersphere of radius r in \({\mathbb{H}}P^ m\), where \(0<r<\pi /2\) such that \(\cot^ 2(r)=1/2m\).
