In this important and impressive paper which is in part motivated by problems arising in random matrix theory, the authors study asymptotics of kernel functions in weighted Bergman spaces consisting of analytic functions having \[ \|f\|^2_{mQ}=\int_{\mathbb{C}}|f(z)|^2e^{2mQ(z)}dA(z)<\infty \] for a continuous potential \(Q\colon \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{R}\) and \(m\) a real parameter (typically thought of as large). In addition to the usual Bergman kernel, they consider various related objects such as partial Bergman kernels and (partial) Bergman densities. The interest is typically in obtaining asymptotics, ideally universal, of such kernels and densities in the regime where the parameter is large, under some mild regularity assumptions on the potential \(Q\). The authors explore such questions in a systematic way, exploiting in part some of their earlier work on planar orthogonal polynomials. A well-written introduction surveys the results presented in the paper, and provides an overview of related work. Highlights include expansions that are valid in off-spectral regions, and error function asymptotics at interfaces. The proofs that follow should be of significant interest to researchers interested in kernel functions and their asymptotic expansions.
