The authors give a characterisation of the diameter and the width of the numerical range of a \(n\times n\) matrix and derive an algorithm to compute these quantities. Then, for \(n=2, 3\) and \(4\) the diameter and width of an \(n\times n\) unitary bordering matrix is determined. Moreover, the authors conjecture that if the boundary \(C\) of the numerical range of a matrix has constant width, then \(C\) is a circle or a single point. They prove this conjecture for nilpotent Toeplitz matrices. Finally, they give an explicit formula for the boundary generating curve of the numerical range of a nilpotent Toeplitz matrix.
