In this well-written paper the authors address the following question; what are necessary and sufficient conditions for a Bessel sequence in an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space to have a finite extension to a frame. Consider a pair of Bessel sequences where one of the sequences has the analysis operator \(A\) and the other sequence has the synthesis operator (i.e., the dual of the analysis operator) \(S\). The answer to the question is a condition that the authors call essential duality of Bessel sequences, which states that the operator \(I - SA\) is a compact one. The authors discuss in detail several consequences of the main result. Special attention is given to the case when the extended sequence forms a Parseval frame.
