The authors present a comparison of approximate shape gradients. Shape gradients and approximate shape gradients are discussed. Using comprehensive convergence analysis, the authors show that the volume based expression for the shape gradient in general provides better accuracy in a finite element setting. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the theory discussed.
