Let \(G\) be a finite group, let \(\mathbb ZG\) be its integral group ring, and let \(V(\mathbb ZG)\) denote the group of normalized units of \(\mathbb ZG\). In this article, the authors consider the following question, which was already raised in Higman's Ph.D. thesis in 1940: Is each finite subgroup of \(V(\mathbb ZG)\) isomorphic to a subgroup of \(G\)? A first step toward an answer to this question is to consider subgroups of \(V(\mathbb ZG)\) of prime power order. In [\textit{M. Hertweck} et al., J. Group Theory 12, No. 6, 873-882 (2009; Zbl 1191.16036)] the following was proved: If \(p=2\) or \(f\in\{1,2\}\) then for all primes \(r\), the \(r\)-subgroups of \(V(\mathbb Z\mathrm{PSL}(2,p^f))\) are isomorphic to subgroups of \(\mathrm{PSL}(2,p^f)\). In the paper under review, the authors strengthen this result to also include the case when \(f=3\) and \(p\) is an arbitrary (odd) prime. For the proof, the authors use what they call a non-cyclic HeLP method. The original HeLP method in the cyclic case goes back to the papers [\textit{M. Hertweck}, ``Partial augmentations and Brauer character values of torsion units in group rings'', \url{arXiv:math/0612429}] and [\textit{I. S. Luthar} and \textit{I. B. S. Passi}, Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 99, No. 1, 1-5 (1989; Zbl 0678.16008)].
