The authors consider a nonlinear wave equation with a nonlocal damping term. The problem is studied in a bounded domain of \(\mathbb{R}^N\) possessing smooth boundary. The damping term \(M(\|\nabla u\|^2_{L^2(\Omega)})\partial_tu\) is allowed to degenerate which produces difficulties in the analysis (e.g. it is not possible to recover the total energy using a simple multiplier). In fact, the authors are able to show exponential stability borrowing some ideas contained in [\textit{B. Dehman} et al., Math. Z. 254, No. 4, 729--749 (2006; Zbl 1127.93015); Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 36, No. 4, 525--551 (2003; Zbl 1036.35033)]. Well-posedness results are also given.
