Let \(X_ 1,X_ 2,\ldots,X_ n\) be vector spaces over a field \(K\), \(\dim X_ j=d_ j\), \(X=X_ 1\otimes X_ 2\otimes\cdots\otimes X_ n\). The rank of a general vector \(x\in X\) is defined to be the smallest integer \(r_ K(x)\) such that \(x\) is a sum of \(r_ K(x)\) decomposable vectors. Define the maximal-rank function \(f_ n\) by \(f_ n(d_ 1,d_ 2,\ldots,c_ n;K)=\max\{r_ K(x)\mid x\in K^{d_ 1}\otimes K^{d_ 2}\otimes\cdots\otimes K^{d_ n}\}\). The authors obtain the following result. If \(d_ 1\geq 2\) and \(d_ 2\geq 2\), then \(f_ 3(d_ 1,d_ 2,d_ 3;K)\leq d_ 3+f_ 3(d_ 1-1,d_ 2-1,d_ 3;K)\). As a corollary of this result, the authors obtain some explicit bounds in certain special cases: (1) If \(d_ 3=d_ 1+d_ 2- 2u\) and \(0\leq u\leq\min\{d_ 1,d_ 2\}\), then \(f_ 3(d_ 1,d_ 2,d_ 3;K)\leq d_ 1d_ 2-u^ 2\); (2) If \(d_ 3=d_ 1+d_ 2-(2t+1)\) and \(0\leq t<\min\{d_ 1,d_ 2\}\), then \(f_ 3(d_ 1,d_ 2,d_ 3;K)\leq d_ 1d_ 2-t(t+1)\); (3) If \(d_ 1\leq d_ 2\leq d_ 3\) and \(d_ 3\leq d_ 1+d_ 2\), then \(f_ 3(d_ 1,d_ 2,d_ 3;K)\leq(1/4)[(d_ 1+d_ 2+d_ 3)^ 2-2(d^ 2_ 1+d^ 2_ 2+d^ 2_ 3)]\).
