The author gives a detailed description of some moduli spaces of stable rank 2 bundles on a complex ruled surface \(X\) over a smooth algebraic curve \(C\). For a polarization \({\mathcal L}\) let \({\mathcal M}_{\mathcal L} (c_ 1, c_ 2)\) be the moduli space of \({\mathcal L}\)-stable rank 2 bundles on \(X\) with Chern classes \((c_ 1, c_ 2)\), where \(4c_ 2 - c^ 2_ 1 > 0\). It is well-known that there is a natural partition of the ample cone, say \(\mathbb{C}_ X\), into chambers depending on \((c_ 1, c_ 2)\), and for \({\mathcal L}_ 1\), \({\mathcal L}_ 2\) in the same chamber \({\mathcal C}\) the moduli spaces \({\mathcal M}_{{\mathcal L}_ 1} (c_ 1, c_ 2)\), \({\mathcal M}_{{\mathcal L}_ 2} (c_ 1, c_ 2)\) can be naturally identified, and so is shortly denoted by \({\mathcal M}_{\mathcal C}\). Let \({\mathcal C}_ f\) be the chamber such that the class \(f\) of the fibre of the ruling is in the boundary of \({\mathcal C}_ f\). By a result of Friedman the moduli space belonging to the chamber \({\mathcal C}_ f\) is smooth and irreducible of dimension \(4c_ 2 - c^ 2_ 1 - 3\chi ({\mathcal O}_ X)\). By studying how the moduli space changes when crossing the border between adjacent chambers, the author gives a birational description of \({\mathcal M}_{\mathcal C} (0,c_ 2)\) and also of \({\mathcal M}_{\mathcal C} (\sigma, c_ 2)\) where \(\sigma\) is the section of the ruling with minimal self-intersection. As another application of his methods he obtains that all irreducible components of these moduli spaces have Kodaira dimension \(-\infty\).
