Generalizing some ideas of \textit{H. Hadwiger} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 194, 101-110 (1955; Zbl 0064.166)] and of \textit{H. Groemer} [Math. Ann. 198, 23-56 (1972; Zbl 0227.52004)], the author introduces an integral. The combinatorial Euler characteristic for finite unions of compact convex sets can be defined in terms of this integral without making decomposition and extension like in the classic approach for polyhedra. Finite unions of closed convex sets cannot be obtained by cutting convex sets as in the polyhedral case, so the author deals separately with functions generated by indicator functions of closed convex sets and relatively open sets.
