This textbook is essentially the English translation of the fourth edition of the authors' German book ``Funktionentheorie I'' (Springer, 2005). The first and third editions, both in German, have been extensively reviewed (1993; Zbl 0783.30001) and (2000; Zbl 1058.30500), respectively. From the preface of this English edition: ``The many new applications and exercises were completed in the last decade to also allow a partial parallel approach using computer algebra systems and graphic tools, which may have a fruitful, powerful impact especially in complex analysis.''
