In this interesting paper, by using a generalization of the Lax semigroup, the authors construct an appropriate approximating family for the semigroup \(S(t)\), \(t\geq 0\), generated by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on \(\partial X=C(\partial \Omega)\). Showing that the family satisfies the Chernoff's product formula and has some compactness properties and a smoothing effect, they show that, for any bounded domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) with smooth boundary \(\partial \Omega\), the semigroup \(S(t)\), \(t\geq 0\), is analytic, compact and Markov irreducible. Finally, exploiting the ergodic properties of the semigroup, they also describe its asymptotic behavior and formulate four open problems.
