The lecture notes under review, based on the summer school \textit{Arrangements in Pyrénées} (2012), give an introduction to toric and tropical compactifications of complements of hyperplane arrangements in complex linear spaces, in particular, the Gel'fand--MacPherson construction, the visible contours compactification by Kapranov, and the wonderful compactfication by De Concini and Procesi. These are preceded by explaining the necessary prerequisites from matroid theory and from toric and tropical geometry, which occupies the first half of the paper. Then, in Section 5, the compactification constructions are given, along with discoveries by \textit{E. M. Feichtner} and \textit{B. Sturmfels} [Port. Math. (N.S.) 62, No. 4, 437--468 (2005; Zbl 1092.52006)] and by \textit{F. Ardila} and \textit{C. J. Klivans} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 96, No. 1, 38--49 (2006; Zbl 1082.05021)] that relate the Gel'fand--MacPherson construction to the wonderful compactfication.
