The Reidemeister-Singer theorem claims that two Heegaard splitting of a closed 3-manifold become isotopic after suitable stabilization. The author translates the theorem into the language of Morse theory and performs the stabilization by adding pairs of canceled handles by indexes 1 and 2. To make the above mentioned translation, the author uses the Cerf technique that reduces some isotopy problem to a problem about real functions.
