The authors study the Hamilton--Jacobi equation \[ \begin{gathered} S_t + \frac 12 (S_x^2 + \omega^2 x^2) = 0 \\ \rho_t + (\rho S_x)_x = 0 \end{gathered} \] with initial condition \((S_0(x),\rho_0(x))\). This system can be considered as a system describing the flow of inviscid compressible fluid with \(S\) the velocity potential. The authors show that, if \(S_0\) is globally Lipschitz continuous and locally semiconcave and \(\rho_0\) is a finite Borel measure, then there exists a unique viscosity solution \((S,\rho)\). Further, they study the structure of the velocity and density. Under additional assumptions on the data, it is proved that the solution is classical. Finally, the authors show that the solution can be extended for negative times so that the extension is again a classical solution to the system above.
