Let \(R\) be a nearring with additive group \(R(+)\) and multiplicative semigroup \(R(\cdot)\). A nearring \(R\) with identity is called local if the set of all non-invertible elements of \(R(\cdot)\) forms a subgroup of \(R(+)\). If the multiplicative group \(U(R)\) of \(R(\cdot)\) has a locally cyclic 2-subgroup of finite index, then the authors prove that \(R\) is finite. The local nearrings \(R\), whose multiplicative groups \(U(R)\) are generalized quaternion, are described. In particular, it is proved that \(U(R)\) is either quaternion of order \(8\), or generalized quaternion of order \(16\). Moreover, the additive groups \(R(+)\) are Abelian of one of \(5\) possible types. For all such nearrings are constructed examples. It is shown that the subgroup of all non-invertible elements of \(R(\cdot)\) is trivial if \(R(+)\) is an Abelian group of type \((3,3)\) and it is an elementary Abelian group of index \(2\) in \(R(+)\) otherwise.
