As main result it is shown that, for \(T\in{\mathcal S}'(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(\mu< n\), the distribution \(T\) is \({\mathcal S}'(\mathbb{R}^n)\)-convolvable with \(|x|^{-\mu}\) if and only if \((1+ |x|^2)^{-\mu/2}T\) belongs to \({\mathcal D}_{L^1}'(\mathbb{R}^n)\). Since the classical fundamental solution for the Laplace operator \(\Delta\) is proportional to \(|x|^{-n+2}\) for \(n\geq 3\), this result describes an optimal codomain for the Laplacian and this fundamental solution. A similar result for the product Laplacian \(\Delta_x\Delta_y\) is also obtained.
